In that time, the Nepalese doctor can make a small incision in his patient's eye, remove the cloudy cataract impairing her vision and replace it with an inexpensive artificial lens. "Some of our younger surgeons even do it faster than that," Ruit told CNN. For many patients, it's the first time they've seen in years, if not decades. In the past 30 years, Ruit has personally restored the sight of more than 100,000 people across Asia and Africa, and taught his rapid-fire technique to countless other eye surgeons in parts of the world as isolated as North Korea. His patients suffer from eye conditions that are mostly preventable. But because of poverty and limited access to public health services they have been unable to seek treatment. Their story is all too common in the developing world. An estimated 39 million people are blind worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. Of these, around 90% live in low-income areas and 80% suffer from conditions that can be prevented or cured.

The new carrier will not replace Malaysia Airlines. Flymojo's fleet of Bombardier C100 passenger jets will seat up to 150 passengers each. The new airline will fly between the Malaysian cities of Sabah and Sarawak, as well as other key cities in the region. Its main hub will be Senai International Airport in Malaysia. Alies Anor Abdul, chairman of flymojo, said the airline's goal is to make air travel "a much-anticipated and longed for experience," adding that the company is dedicated to "putting the human touch back into flying." Yamaguchi Gumi—Revenue: $80 billion The largest known gang in the world is called the Yamaguchi Gumi, one of several groups collectively referred to in Japan as “Yakuza,” a term that is roughly equivalent to the American use of “mafia.” The Yamaguchi Gumi make more money from drug trafficking than any other source, according to Hiromitsu Suganuma, Japan’s former national police chief. The next two leading sources of revenue are gambling and extortion, followed closely by “dispute resolution.”. 2. Solntsevskaya Bratva—Revenue: $8.5 billion Russian mafia groups sit on the other side of the organizational spectrum from Yakuza. The group is composed of 10 separate quasi-autonomous “brigades” that operate more or less independently of each other. 3. And Camorra has been at it a long time. Based in Naples, the group’s history dates back to the 19th century, when it was formed initially as a prison gang. As members were released, the group flourished during the bloody political struggles in Italy during the 1800s by offering protection services and as a force for political organization among Italy’s poor. 4. ‘Ndrangheta—Revenue: $4.5 billion ‘Ndarangheta is the country’s second largest mafia group by revenue. While it is involved in many of the same illicit activities as Camorra, ‘Ndrangheta has made its name for itself by building international ties with South American cocaine dealers, and it controls much of the transatlantic drug market that feeds Europe. It has also been expanding its operations in the U.S. and has helped prop up the Gambino and Bonnano crime families in New York. 5. Sinaloa Cartel—Revenue $3 billion Sianola is Mexico’s largest drug cartel, one of several gangs that has been terrorizing the Mexican population as it serves as the middleman between South American producers of illegal drugs and an unquenchable American market.

A new study conducted by online advertising network Chitika found that states with more college graduates tend to also have higher iPhone sales. Alaska (66%), Montana and Vermont have the largest percentage of iPhone users. New Mexico (41%), Iowa and Delaware have the lowest share of iPhone sales per capita. Notably, Chitika found that increased wealth is also linked to greater iPhone sales -- but since college degrees also correlate with higher incomes, Chitika says those results are redundant. Other studies have found similar results. Rich, white males tend to buy more iPhones, particularly in the first weeks that they go on sale. In the first month of sales, nearly 80% of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus buyers in the United States were male, and more than 60% made over $75,000 a year, according to Slice, a company that tracks consumer purchases. A new study shows that states with more college-educated people tend to have higher iPhone sales. A woman who the police believe is the mother of the seven of the children is in a hospital suffering from serious injuries. Police said they were called to the property in the Manoora area of Cairns on Friday morning after reports of an injured woman. "During an examination of the residence, police located the bodies of the children, all aged between 18 months and 15 years," the Queensland Police Service said in a statement. Police so far have no formal suspects in the case, said Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar, but he sought to allay fears among local residents about the deaths. "There's no need for the public to be concerned about this other than it's a tragic, tragic event," he told reporters near the crime scene, adding that the area is under control. he said police were "looking at anybody who's had any involvement." "These events are extremely distressing for everyone.”Police officers aren't immune from that. We're human beings as well." Australian media reported that at least some of the victims were believed to have been stabbed. But Asnicar declined to confirm that, saying police are waiting for autopsy reports. The injured woman, who is believed to be 34 years old, is being treated for her wounds and is helping police with their investigation, according to the statement. She's in stable condition and is not under police custody. Police believe the eighth child, who they don't think is one of the woman's children, is a member of the family, he said.

The free app, released on Thursday, lets you create or join chatrooms based on shared interests. Start a "room" for "Law & Order" fan fiction writers, toss up a background photo of Olivia Benson and customize your name or like button with gun or knife emojis. People who join the room can post photos, text and videos. You can share the invite widely or keep the guest list short, though the posts are public. The social media giant is 10 years old. That's solidly middle-age in Internet years, as evidenced by the number of parents and grandparents who have successfully colonized Facebook. To avoid obsolescence, the company has been quick to jump on any new messaging trends that are hip with the kids. It bought Instagram and WhatsApp. It made a Snapchat clone called Poke in 2012, and another called Slingshot earlier this year. Recently, anonymity has been a hot topic embraced by standalone apps such as Whisper and Secret, and cherished by people whose online personas are entirely pseudonymous. Facebook saw first-hand how much people value being able to communicate under their chosen identities. The company started cracking down on members who weren't adhering to its "real-name" policy and incurred the wrath of activists and drag queens. Rooms takes the opposite stance. It doesn't require people to use their real names, and encourages chatters to use as many "nicknames" as they like for different rooms. In the blog post announcing the app, Facebook's Josh Miller trumpets the key feature. "In Rooms, you can be 'Wonder Woman' -- or whatever name makes you feel most comfortable and proud. Rescue crews combed the high-altitude paths and passes of the popular Annapurna region, as well as the neighboring Manang district for trekkers missing for nearly a week. Nine stranded Israeli tourists were rescued Thursday, as well as three Canadians and four Indians who were pulled to safety, according to the Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal. The group said it deployed helicopters to rescue hikers stranded by snow, floodwaters and avalanches unleashed along the popular Himalayan trekking trails by heavy snow Tuesday. Regional administrator Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya told CNN that 14 trekkers were now known to have died near the iconic 5,416-meter (17,770-foot) Thorung La Pass in Mustang district, the highest point of the popular 21-day Annapurna Circuit trek. The bodies include those of Israelis, Nepalis and Poles, he said. Even as the total death toll climbed from the 17 reported Wednesday, Thapaliya warned that there are chances of finding more people dead or lost around the pass. A Nepal army team made it up to 16,000 feet on Thursday -- still short of the pass -- on the side of the mountain where the 14 bodies were found.

Many runners wore face or gas mask to protect themselves from the effects of the poor air quality but there were several withdrawals before and during the race as runners feared for their health. The recommended daily average maximum level of exposure as prescribed by the World Health Organization is just 25 micrograms. The United States embassy in Beijing, which monitors air quality daily, described the conditions on its official website as "hazardous" -- with the advice to "avoid prolonged or heavy exertion." Organizers reportedly decided against abandoning the race because of the large number of overseas entrants who had traveled to Beijing for the annual race. But they made available 140,000 sponges so runners could get some relief on the course by hoping to wipe away the particles of smog at regular intervals. At the finish near the Olympic Park many runners complained about the conditions, but there were no immediate reports of any serious health problems among competitors. China, like many rapidly emerging economies, has suffered from poor air quality and pollution, particularly in its major cities. Experts say it is caused, in the main, by the use of coal in electricity and power generation and emissions from the growing number of motor vehicles. For the Beijing Games in 2008, the government imposed draconian restrictions on car use in the Chinese capital and factories were ordered to reduce their production.
