A 1941 song written by Victor Schertzinger with the lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It was introduced in the 1942 American movie "The Fleet's In", directed by Schertzinger. It cheerfully portrays an imaginary South American woman named Tangerine, who draws attention of anyone around her. The recorded version of the song was released in the same year by the performers who introduced it in the film: the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra; female singer Helen O'Connell; and male singer Bob Eberly. It was a smash hit at that time and soon became a jazz standard. We based our performance on this version, with different lyrics sung by male and female singers. Particularly interesting is a rarely sung second chorus sung by a female singer. A hit song performed in 1979 by Circus (Sākasu), a Japanese four-member chorus group consisting of two women and two men. Set against the backdrop of an era when overseas travel by air was becoming increasingly commonplace, the song refreshingly portrays the feelings of a woman who rereads an airmail letter from her lover while on board an airplane and thinks fondly of him. The song was co-written in both lyrics and music by Jimmy Dorsey, a jazz clarinetist and big-band leader, and Paul Madeira, a jazz pianist and arranger, and was published in 1941. The following year, a recording by Jimmmy Dorsey and His Orchestra featuring Bob Eberly on vocals was released. Since then, the song has become established as a jazz standard and has been covered by many renowned jazz vocalists. A beloved jazz standard and a favorite among musicians at jam sessions. It was originally an instrumental piece featured in the 1944 American film "The Uninvited", composed by Victor Young. Lyrics by Ned Washington were added in 1946. The lyrics describe a woman named Stella, a character in the film, making love with her lover on a night when the moon and stars are shining brightly. In this song, the protagonist lies awake in bed during the wee small hours, unable to sleep because he is thinking about a girl. It was composed by Jerome Kern with lyrics by Dorothy Fields and inserted in "Swing Time", a 1936 American comedy film starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers. Here, the male protagonist, played by Astaire, expresses his pure love for his beloved by singing this song, which tells her how lovely she looks tonight. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for this year. A very famous jazz standard. It was originally a theme song for the 1962 American film of the same name, written by Henry Mancini with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. They received the Academy Award for Best Original Song for their work. The film itself tells the story of a couple who fall into alcoholism. In the jazz world, however, it is usually performed as a bright and swinging tune, detached from that original context. Then, Tony Bennett recorded it the next year, which became the most popular version of the song. Since then, it became widely known as a standard number of jazz, chanson, and pops.
