A 1941 song written by Victor Schertzinger with the lyrics by Johnny Mercer. It was introduced in the 1942 American movie "The Fleet's In", directed by Schertzinger. It cheerfully portrays an imaginary South American woman named Tangerine, who draws attention of anyone around her. The recorded version of the song was released in the same year by the performers who introduced it in the film: the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra; female singer Helen O'Connell; and male singer Bob Eberly. It was a smash hit at that time and soon became a jazz standard. We based our performance on this version, with different lyrics sung by male and female singers. Particularly interesting is a rarely sung second chorus sung by a female singer. An Okinawan popular song written in 1993 by singer-songwriter Yasukatsu Ohshima, born in Ishigaki Island, with lyrics by Eisho Higa, the lead vocal of BEGIN and also born in the same island. According to the Okinawan dialect, the word "Irayoimaanu", repeatedly used in the song, means "adorable" or "make someone feel nostalgic". I am not sure if my interpretation is correct, but it seems that in this song both Okinawa (including Miyako and Ishigaki) and the Japanese Mainland are compared to adorable 'flowers' respectively, each of which floats on the wave in a moon-lit night. They received the Academy Award for Best Original Song for their work. The film itself tells the story of a couple who fall into alcoholism. In the jazz world, however, it is usually performed as a bright and swinging tune, detached from that original context. Then, Tony Bennett recorded it the next year, which became the most popular version of the song. Since then, it became widely known as a standard number of jazz, chanson, and pops. A popular song written and composed by Shinji Tanimura. The original rendition was released in 1978 and sung by female singer Momoe Yamaguchi, which became a big hit. Since then, it has established a reputation as an immortal song that well illustrates travelers' sentiments. On his part, Tanimura himself would also sing it from time to time. While it is commonly played as a ballad, I had a feeling that the way its melody and chord proceed might be suited for jazzy arrangement. Since its publication in 1940, it has been performed and recorded by so many popular and jazz musicians, both vocalists and instrumentalists. Set in Berkeley Square in London in the night, the song illustrates a love affair between a man and a woman in an elegant manner. The nightingale is a songbird that has been celebrated in poetry and literature in Europe since ancient times for the beauty of its song. Also, it is commonly understood as a sign of the coming spring. A song composed by Ryoichi Hattori with lyrics by Yaso Saijo. It was first sung by Li Xianglan (Yoshiko Yamaguchi) in Japanese in a 1940 film in which she played the leading role. The recorded version was published in the same year with the rendition of female vocalist Hamako Watanabe and male vocalist Noboru Kirishima. A Chinese version was also released in 1943 with the rendition of Chinese female vocalist Bai Hong. (Note that it consists only of two choruses, while the Japanese one consists of three choruses.) With its elegant melody and slow rhythm, the song expresses a romance between a man and a woman that unfolds in the Chinese city of Suzhou in an impressive manner.
