**Please turn on the English subtitles.** Did you know there was a Japanese 49er at the gold mine in San Francisco? His name is Manjiro, aka John Manjiro. He was officially the first Japanese to live and work in the United States. He and his fellow fishermen drifted out to the Pacific Ocean while fishing along the coast of Japan at age 15. He was then taken to Honolulu, and to Massachusets in 1841. He was educated in Massachusetts, then in 1849, at age 23, he heard about the gold rush in California, then moved to San Francisco. He earned $600 for obtaining tickets for friends back in Honolulu, and himself to go onboard a ship to return to Japan. He became an advisor/translator for the Shogun, and revisited San Francisco in 1860, to negotiate the first trade between Japan and the US.
